What is Fat Grafting for Reconstructive Procedures?

There are situations where a depression or hole may form in a part of your body such as the chest or abdomen. This is usually due to a breast removal, burn scars, cancer surgery, major wounds, or severe weight change. The skin appears sunken and the patient may feel depressed about his/her appearance. In addition to fat grafting for facial aesthetics, Dr. Derderian also performs fat grafting as part of body reconstruction procedures to restore natural shapes.

How is Fat Grafting Performed?

Excess fat may be drawn from other parts of your body and grafted to the affected area. It is most frequently used as part of the reconstruction process after a mastectomy. If there is not a sufficient quantity of fat available, Dr. Derderian may use fat or filler from other sources. The fat is harvested from the donor area, processed, and transplanted into the area under reconstruction in order to provide depth and substance. The area may be scarred or damaged due to injury or radiation, and may also require other forms of reconstruction in order to restore a more normalized appearance.
